About the speakerProfessor Luis M. Ruilope serves as Head of the Hypertension Unit at the Hospital 12 de Octubre, Madrid, Spain and is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Complutense University, Madrid. Professor Ruilope received his MD from the University of Madrid, and completed his residency and fellowship in nephrology at the Jiménez Díaz Foundation, Madrid.
Professor Ruilope has held many distinguished positions in various national and international societies. From 1993 to 1997, he was Officer at Large on the Scientific Council of the European Society of Hypertension and from 1994 to 1998, he was a member of the Scientific Council of the International Society of Hypertension. Professor Ruilope was an International Fellow on the Council for High Blood Pressure Research and on the Council for Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease at the American Heart Association. He currently serves as President for the Spanish Hypertension Society. From 1998 to 2005, he was a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Society of Cardiology. Professor Ruilope has served on the editorial board for numerous international scientific journals and periodicals including: Journal of Hypertension, Blood Pressure, Medicina Clínica, Hypertension, Journal of Human Hypertension, Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Nephrology, Dialysis & Transplantation, Hypertension Report, and American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
Professor Ruilope’s main area of interest is hypertension and the kidney, on which he has been extensively
published in peer reviewed journals. His doctoral thesis was “Factores que regulan la secreción de aldosterona en sujetos normales binefrectomizados y pacientes hipertensos esenciales.” As a specialist, he was a member of various landmark scientific studies including HOT, INSIGHT, SCOPE, CON VINCE, ROADMAP, ASCEND, IDNT, OCTAVE, and VALUE.
