Renal Master Class

Meeting highlights and educational resources

Battling the progression of chronic kidney disease
Exploring the role of phosphate and protein levels in clinical management & outcomes
held on February 17-18, 2012 in Madrid

The Renal Master Class programme is an initiative of the Physicians Academy for Continuing Education (PACE) foundation with a particular focus on issues and opportunities management of patients with chronic kidney disease. The Renal Master Class was a dynamic meeting with state of the art lectures, clinical debates, and practical workshops.

Each faculty member will provide in 5-10 minutes the key highlights of their presentation

Protein energy wasting in CKD patients

Dr. Carrero (Stockholm, Sweden) gives an overview about the prevalence, pathophysiology, outcomes and monitoring of protein energy wasting.

Mechanisms of CKD-MBD: New insights in the pathogenesis

Dr. Cannata-Andia (Oviedo, Spain) tells about the pathogenesis of CKD-MBD.

CKD & MBD: what are the drivers of disease?

Prof. John Cunningham (London, United Kingdom) discusses what are the responses to a decrease of GFR on kidney disease and how these can be triggered.

CKD and CVD disease: a clinical update from KDIGO

Prof. Ritz (Heidelberg, Germany) gives an overview about different cardiorenal syndromes

CKD & Nutrition: Role of protein intake & phosphate levels

Prof. Denis Fouque (Lyon, France) discusses the role of protein intake on renal function and on phosphate levels.

New evidence in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia

Dr. Cozzolino (Milan, Italy) discusses the role of phosphate binders in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia

CME Accreditation

The Renal Master Class was accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) for 7 CME hours and  by the European Board for Accreditation in Cardiology (EBAC) for 6 CME hours.

Financial support

This Renal Master Class was sponsored through an unrestricted educational grant provided by Shire Pharmaceuticals.

Educational objectives of the Renal Master Class were:

  • To review the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease
  • To explore the mechanisms that underlie the progression of chronic kidney disease
  • To define the cornerstones of current treatment of chronic kidney disease
  • To specify the needs of both dialysis and predialysis patients
  • To define goals in the management of metabolic and electrolyte disturbances
  • To define the adequate nutritional needs in the CKD patient
  • To improve therapy adherence in patients with chronic kidney disease
  • To develop a consensus on practical guidelines for day-to-day management of patients with chronic kidney disease to achieve the best attainable health status
