The American Heart Association (AHA) has published a scientific statement on the cardiopulmonary impact of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and vaping products.
In 2007, e-cigarette products were introduced in the United States, and since then the use of these products has grown exponentially, particularly among youth and young adults. E-cigarettes and vaping products have gained popularity as these products have been touted as a safer alternative to combustible cigarettes and as a potential tobacco-cessation product. However, e-cigarettes and vaping products also cause adverse health effects.
This scientific statement discusses the use of e-cigarette and vaping products in the US, the harmful and potentially harmful components in vaping aerosols, and the effects of these products on acute and chronic cardiovascular and pulmonary health, based on molecular, animal, and clinical data. Moreover, this scientific statement examines the use of e-cigarettes and vaping products as cigarette-cessation products, and reviews the current public health and regulation efforts.
