Practical recommendations for management of diabetes during COVID-19 pandemic

A consensus document by a group of representatives from primary and secondary care has been published on the management of diabetes for patients at risk or with confirmed COVID-19.

In a Personal View article in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, an international faculty of experts in the field of diabetes and endocrinology from both primary and specialist care provide guidance and recommendations for the management of diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic. These recommendations are both for diabetes patients in primary and specialist care.

Diabetes patients have an increased risk of severe complications when infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, causing COVID-19. Diabetes is one of the most common comorbidities in patients with COVID-19; 20-50% Of COVID-19 patients have diabetes. Because of this link between diabetes and COVID-19, an international group of experts has convened virtually and has come up with practical recommendations for management of diabetes patients during the COVID-19 outbreak. In addition, this document gives insights into potential mechanistic links between SARS-CoV-2 infection and diabetes, and expands on specific considerations for subgroups of diabetes patients.
