AHA/ACC/ADA/ASN issue first CKM syndrome guideline
The AHA/ACC/ADA/ASN have issued a guideline on the prevention, detection, evaluation, and management of Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) syndrome.
The 2026 AHA/ACC/ADA/ASN guideline provides a comprehensive framework for the prevention, detection, evaluation, and management of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome.
The guideline replaces the 2013 AHA/ACC/TOS guideline for the management of overweight and obesity in adults and expands its scope to address the interconnected nature of obesity, T2D, CKD, and cardiovascular disease.
The guideline recommends routine CKM staging in youth and adults, use of the PREVENT equations to estimate 10- and 30-year cardiovascular risk, and regular assessment of metabolic risk factors, kidney function, and social determinants of health. It advocates multidisciplinary care with a designated care coordinator, prioritizes lifestyle intervention and weight management, and recommends evidence-based therapies—including SGLT2 inhibitors, GLP-1-based therapies, RAS inhibitors, and nonsteroidal MRAs—to reduce cardiovascular and kidney events in patients with T2D, CKD, ASCVD, and HF.
