The National Lipid Association (NLA) has released a draft of new recommendations for cholesterol management, focussing on diverse ethnic and racial groups and all age groups. The release was announced during the NLA Scientific Sessions in Chicago, IL, USA. Part Two of the ‘NLA recommendations for patient-centered management of dyslipidaemia’ have been posted on the NLA website, and are open to public comment until June 25. The recommendations cover conditions that span the lifespan from children to seniors, from pregnancy to menopause, and conditions not previously identified as being high risk such as individuals with HIV or rheumatologic disease.

Part 1, published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, re-affirm the importance of cholesterol goals for the prevention of heart attack and stroke. The recommendations are intended as guidance to clinicians for treating patients with dyslipidaemia.
Part 2 of the NLA Recommendations provides a unique set of recommendations for patient-centered management of dyslipidaemia for special populations and conditions. It includes recommendations for Hispanics, South Asians, African Americans, older patients, children and adolescents, women and unique issues in women’s health and patients with HIV, rheumatoid arthritis and residual risk. It also considers lifestyle therapies, including nutrition and physical activity, and improving patient outcome through adherence and team-based collaborative care.

Slides are available for review and public comments could be submitted through June 25th 2015. After consideration of comments, a final version of Part Two is scheduled for publication in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology later this year.
